It depicts painter Raja Ravi Varma''s passion towards art and also takes a closer look at the method behind the madness. The film is based on writer Ranjit Desai''s biographical novel Raja Ravi Varma, whose art knew no boundaries.
Centuries ago a painter dared to paint Indian Gods the way he imagined them. His portraits of goddesses were inspired by a woman, Sugandha (Nandana Sen), who was his muse. A case was filed against Raja Ravi Varma for making obscene paintings because some people from the Hindu community claimed that his work had hurt their religious sentiments.
Apart from the court case, the film also shows his struggle with business because all he could do is paint, but unfortunately selling the art was not his strength. He partnered with some businessmen who were starting a printing press that would make copies of his paintings and flood the market with his work.
